Let’s talk about the presidential race, shall we?
Here at Rainbow Parents, we mostly focus on Nebraska’s state and local races, as these are the elected officials that we parents tend to know the least about. However, let’s make sure we are up to speed on the federal races that we will vote on this November.
Nebraska is a Red State, so Why Bother?
One important thing about Nebraska is that we split electoral votes by district in presidential elections. Although all 5 electoral votes have typically gone to one candidate, the 2nd district voted differently than the rest of the state and gave 1 electoral vote to Obama in 2008 and 1 electoral vote to Biden in 2020. This system makes our votes matter more than in other strongly red or blue states, and recent talk of moving to a “winner take all” system should be resisted.
Presidential Race
Most of us know more about candidates for President/Vice President than other races, so we will just highlight a few things about the LGBTQ records of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.
Vice President Kamala Harris has touted her record as Attorney General of California, performing some of the first same sex marriages and outlawing the “gay panic” defense. GLAAD’s accountability tracker lists other past LGBTQ-related actions on her record.
Governor Tim Walz has been an ally since at least the 1990s, when as a public school teacher and football coach, he helped students start a Gay Straight Alliance in a conservative Minnesota town. As governor, he signed laws to make Minnesota a “refuge state” for transgender care and to ban conversion therapy for minors.
Project 2025
The anti-LGBTQ positions of Trump/Vance are well known, and we won’t air those here. We urge you to look into Project 2025, a plan to guide the next conservative president from day one. Project 2025 identifies “elite rulers and woke culture warriors” that need to be fired, eliminated, or silenced. This list includes government workers and agencies, teachers, librarians, scientists, doctors, universities, drag queens, transgender individuals, parents, the “bullying LGBTQ agenda,” promoters of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), President Biden, and Democrats in general.
Republicans for Harris
Some of us who have registered or voted Republican in the past may feel differently now because of LGBTQ people in our lives. A growing nationwide Republicans for Harris movement will be co-chaired in Nebraska by Former U.S. Senator and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, former Nebraska State Senator John McCollister, former Douglas County Commissioner Clare Duda, and businessman Jess Slobotski. Keep an eye out for more from this group in the future.
